MJ (Mary Jane Holt) is a native Georgian who after an 18 year career as a nurse, pursued her dream to be a journalist. And did she ever! She has won first place awards from The Georgia Press Association for inspirational writing, as well as numerous awards for The Community Health Focus magazine which she published for 12 years.
"All I ever wanted to do was write, to encourage, to stimulate others to feel all they could feel, do all they could do, and be all they could BE! As far as I was concerned anybody who settled for less was cheating himself. I had found my true calling, and success had fallen in my direction the first time the evidence of that calling got magnetized to the front of a refrigerator."
Following a conversation with Millard Grimes, owner of several newspapers around the south, in which he referred to her as the "voice of the south", Mary Jane began looking through her columns and realized she had indeed become a "voice of the south."
Other editors have described her column as 'a slice of life sprinkled liberally with faith and values. MJ also does workshops that are "sprinkled with faith and values as well - not religion, just faith and values!" she stresses.
"I often have mentioned my faith and that of others, and frequently written about my spiritual growth and insights (or lack thereof). I make no apology for who I am, what I write or how I teach. My workshops are powerful; many have said they are life-changing. I know they inspire and motivate, empower, even change lives. For this I am thankful."
MJ was first approached back in 1986 by a reporter at WSB-TV in Atlanta who asked and strongly encouraged her to consider working in television. She said NO. She would not even consider it. The suggestion has been thrown out several times since then. It was, however, a "chance" meeting with Jeff Tate, manager of the Ploener Radio Group, that led to her finally obeying what she says may have been a calling that she ignored back in 1986.
"I am a rebellious, strong-willed soul," she says. "Repentance is a very necessary part of my daily routine! Bargaining is what I do perhaps too well, and lucky for me, God has never written me off for all the times I have tried to bargain with him… Reasoning He not only allows, but welcomes (see Isaiah, chapter one!). Bargaining, however, is pushing it!
Yet it felt safe to bargain with Jeff Tate, following our "chance" meeting in late March, 2011, when he wanted me do a television show and I wanted, instead, to do radio. Ultimately, he agreed to let me do radio, if I would do television… and so there you have it the story of how I became MJ, host of Corner of Country Radio and TV."
