The Wolverines have stepped in to save the State Wheelchair Basketball Tournament from cancellation. The tournament was scheduled for March 3rd in Clayton County, but was in danger of being cancelled when the Wolverines got the call. Eight of the top teams from across the state would have had no Roosevelt Warm Springs where to go without an emergency solution.
" We would have been one of the teams left out," said coach Richard mcIntyre. "When I found out the gym was available on March 3rd at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, I knew we had to save this for the athletes."
The Wolverines will need to organize a lot of local support very quickly to make this tournament happen. They are asking civic clubs, churches, businesses, families and individuals to help make this a success.
"Normally we would have 6 months or more to plan this kind of event," said Carol Johnston, Wolverine Booster President. "We only have 35 days to put this altogether. We need to feed over 100 players and have a hospitality room for about 50 staff, officials and other helpers who volunteer to make this work. We need money donations and food commitments. we need them as quickly as possible so we can see where we need extra help."
"We knew from experience that our citizens were very supportive of Wolverine needs," said McIntyre. "Now we are asking everyone to help diabled wheelchair athletes from across the whole state. We cannot offer much in return. We will list help in our tournament program and we can acknowledge donations for tax purposes. But the real payoff will be coming to the event and seeing these kids give their all in a sport that allows them to excel. No one will regret helping this happen."
